Driver license & ID in Colorado.

Renewals, permits and identification cards Start with the right agency and check its requirements before you travel.

Renew the credential, not your vehicle registration.

A driver license or ID renewal belongs to the driver-services side of DMV. Registration renews the vehicle’s record and plates. Keeping the two tasks separate saves a trip to the wrong counter.

Check whether you can renew online.

Start with the official renewal page. It explains eligibility and when an office visit is needed. Follow the instructions that apply to your credential, including any document or examination requirements.

For an in-person visit, check the specific office’s service list and appointment guidance. Limited-service offices may not handle everything a full-service licensing office does.

Before leaving home.

  • Read the official renewal instructions for your credential.
  • Gather the documents requested for your transaction.
  • Confirm the appointment location, service and arrival instructions.
  • Check current office closures and published hours.

Reviewed November 8, 2026 using official Colorado DMV guidance. Requirements and availability may change; follow the agency’s current instructions.
